Luigi Marchesi was indisputably one of the greatest castrato singers of his age. He was born in Milan in 1755. He studied first with the tenor Albuzzi and then with the castrato Caironi. His career commenced singing in the Milan cathedral.
In the theatre he started by singing female r├┤les in comic operas. He progressed to the great castrato parts, singing throughout Italy, in London, M├╝nich, St. Petersburg, Warsaw and Vienna. His singing was noted for its elegance and dignity. He composed several vocal works himself. He died in his home city in 1829.
